“Darting About as Sparks through Stubble”: Making the Most of the Days We Have

The title of this webinar is taken from a Scripture reading for the feast of All Souls (Wis 3:7). Sparks have the potential to ignite. They may reignite a fire that is being extinguished, albeit in a different way, or ignite a new fire from the old. We are all called to tend the fires within ourselves and in one another. This presentation will examine the sparks that are darting about as we experience our aging and how they might help us live more fully into our future.
Caregivers of every stripe, whether those in religious community leadership, caregivers in eldercare homes, family members, or friends, can ignite a spark in others in simple ways such as a deep listening ear, the holding of a hand, the empathetic response or – and this may be most important – simple presence. Join us as we discuss how we can, as Saint Paul wrote, “fan into flame the gift of God” (2 Tim 1:6).

Mercedes McCann, RSM, Ph.D. is a member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. She holds a Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Seton Hall University and a Master’s degree in Psychology from Marywood University. Sr. Mercedes currently serves in Leadership Relations as a liaison to religious communities and as a psychotherapist in the Outpatient Department of the Saint John Vianney Center in Pennsylvania. In addition, she provided therapy services in the Saint John Vianney Center Residential program for 15 years, offering multi-dimensional psychotherapy for women and men religious and priests. Her particular interest is the intersection of spirituality, ministry, community, and good mental health in religious life.
